Lebkuchen of the Year for 2016 - Cashew Chocolate Dream
Each year Lebkuchen Schmidt presents its Lebkuchen of the Year. For 2016 the new recipe is a nut and chocolate lover’s fantasy: Chocolate Cashew Dream (in German “Cashew-Schoko-Traum”)! Lots of finely ground almonds and cashews inside with crunchy hazelnut chunks on top…all smothered in milk chocolate.
Cashews are my all-time favorite nut. I love the mild and rich taste. I was fascinated to see cashews in Costa Rica when we were travelling as a family – I
had no idea they grew on trees (pretty big trees) and that the fruit – or apple – is a beautiful, colorful part of the process. In fact, in some cases cashews are referred to as fruits not nuts. Among the many health benefits of eating cashews my favorites are:
- Cashews are high in fiber/low in fat
- They help lower your "bad" cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke
- Cashews contain antioxidants that help to strengthen the immune system
- They contains very high levels of vitamin C
The Lebkuchen of the Year is always Elisen Lebkuchen – premium Lebkuchen because of its high nut oil content. Elisen Lebkuchen were named after a Lebküchner's daughter and have been the masterpieces of the Lebkuchen Guild since 1808.
This year’s Lebkuchen of the Year – Chocolate Cashew Dream - may be found in five of the Lebkuchen Schmidt Chests and Boxes including: Item #50131 Choice Selection, Item #50156 Milk Chocolate Box (see our Blog on the special treat inside this box), Item #50296 Collection of Lebkuchens of the Year, Item #50406 Festive Chest and Item #50516 Nuremberg Gift Chest.
The Collection of Lebkuchens of the Year is the perfect package to enjoy this year's and past year's special recipes.
Last year Lebkuchen Schmidt offered Zunft Elise as its Lebkuchen of the Year. “Zunft” means Guild – the same Guild that Elise’s father belonged to! The 2015 Zunft Elisen Lebkuchen has 31% nuts and almonds. No additional flavors are added – it is just a really intense nut taste and texture. The Zunft Elise may be found in only two packages this year: Item #50136 Nothing But Lebkuchen and Item #50296 Collection of Lebkuchens of the Year.
Baked Apple Elisen Lebkuchen was the 2014 Lebkuchen of the Year - infused with baked apple for a soft, wonderfully aromatic and tasty treat this was one of my personal favorites. This scrumptious Elisen may be found this year in the following packages: Item #50131 Choice Selection, Item #50136 Nothing But Lebkuchen and Item #50296 Collection of Lebkuchens of the Year.
Black Elise introduced in 2013 is Elisen Lebkuchen with 28% nuts and almonds and cocoa powder in the dough and the whole cookie smothered in dark chocolate glaze. This was a huge hit and many customers ask for this special cookie each year. Fortunately Schmidt has continued this recipe and the Black Elise may be found in the Elisen Favorites Box (Item #50139), the Historic Nuremberg Chest (Item #50576), the Christmas Elisen Chest (Item #50536) and this year’s Collection of Lebkuchens of the Year (Item #50296).
Like Schmidt, Niederegger Marzipan also presents a “Loaf of the Year” – a new flavor or combination in the tradition loaf form. The 2016 Loaf of the Year is Vanilla Toffee – creamy toffee combined with succulent Marzipan with a touch of vanilla coated in Milk Chocolate. In addition to this new loaf Gingerbread World is offering a larger selection of marzipan loaves with some interesting flavors and fillings.
Hope you enjoying trying some new tastes this Christmas Season. We would love to hear what you think of the Chocolate Cashew Dream Lebkuchen and other new items in our Christmas Collection. Comment below or add your reviews to the product pages.
