Ten Beautiful Ways to Display Wendt und Kühn Miniatures

Since 1915 collectors around the world have been enthralled with Wendt und Kühn miniatures. The small wooden figures are handcrafted in the German town of Grünhainichen by artisans using the same design and techniques as established by the women who created the first Angels and Blumenkinder (Flower Children) more than a hundred years ago.

Avid collectors have stories of how they first came to know and love the W&K figures and how they arrange and re-arrange their collections by season or mood. Here are some of the ways they (and I) are displaying their figures in their homes and spaces.

Display your Wendt und Kühn favourites on a Platter or Cake Stand
This is one of my favourite ways to display my own figures. I have accumulated an array of white china platters in various sizes and shapes on which I can arrange one or more W&K figures along with other small favourite objects. The tiny accessories from the Dekoset1 like the ball and the rocking horse and the little birds on twigs round out the scene!

Display your W&K figures on a shelf with other miniatures to create a "Scene"
Create a scene on a shelf or coffee table with your favourite figures surrounded by other miniatures like small tealight houses and miniature Christmas trees. I brought in a small collection of such things maybe (just maybe!) for this very purpose! The tealight houses and porcelain trees from Germany's Räder Design are the perfect size for the Wendt und Kühn figures. I hung a Mini Herrnhuter Star from the shelf above the figures for extra effect!

The new Light Arches from Seiffener Volkskunst (whose workshops are just around the corner from W&K's boutique in Seiffen Germany) are perfect for displaying
Wendt und Kühn figures that are in the 4-8 cm height range. The LED lighting is powered with a USB cord that plugs into a regular phone charger or battery pack. I knew as soon as I saw these Arches that we needed them for the W&K collection!!

Now that we are getting back to hosting people on our home after the isolation of the pandemic we can show off our W&K pieces where guests will see them. Place figures amongst or even on the serving platters or amongst the tea cups or coffee mugs.

Simply display a W&K figure or 2 on a shelf or windowsill
Your favourite figures don't always have to be front and centre! Place a figure or 2 in a slightly obscure place in your home where it will suddenly catch your eye and fill you with good vibes. That glimpse of colour and beautiful form might be just what you need to bring balance back to your day!

Display your W&K collection in hanging or table shelves that have lots of small cubicles
I came across these pictures on Instagram and messaged the woman who posted them asking where she had found this fabulous shelf set up. She explained that this shelf unit is an old beer crate that folds in the middle which she re-purposed to display her large collection of Orchestra Angels. I have been on the lookout for such a display case ever since! If you're an Instagrammer check out 2@kerstin_roepke_haus_garten to see her unique displays of all sorts of beautiful collections!

Use backdrops to create a scene for your figures
Emily M. in Toronto is a serious collector of Wendt & Kühn figures - and a serious collector of vintage clothing. She has a wonderful collection of both W&K Angels and Blumenkinder some of which she displays in a gorgeous antique cabinet with a glass front. She gave us the idea of using post cards, folding Christmas cards and Advent Calendars to create a village scene behind a grouping of figures. I love these ideas!

Display your Figures on Wendt & Kühn's Tiered "Mountains"
Designed especially for W&K figures these lightweight wooden platforms are made to compliment the figures. The glossy midnight blue Mountain for the Grünhainichen Orchestra Angels and a spring-y light green one for the Blumenkinder (Flower Children) figures. They come in various sizes in half round or as a corner unit. We stock a couple of Mountains and we are more than happy to order for you the size you want during our Special Order events.

There are so many ways to decorate with and to display the beautiful figures from Wendt und Kühn. If you're looking for more inspiration check out the

Wendt & Kühn website or their Instagram feed. On Instagram you may also want to follow hashtags like #wendtundkühn ##wendtundkuehn #wendtandkühn #wendtandkuehn. W&K is also on Pinterest with lots of beautiful pics.

We would love to hear and see your ideas for displaying your collections. Please email your stories and pictures to me at info@gingerbread-world.com if you are willing to share them with the growing community of W&K collectors here in Canada.

OK - so if you got this far in reading this article you'll notice that there are only 8 ideas presented here - not 10. I was really ambitious when I started writing this and perhaps some day I'll finish off the last 2 - which will be a lot easier when people start sending me pics and ideas (hint, hint!!!!).

Enjoy!
