What to Grow in The Green Pockets Hanging Planters
Choose low-growing plants for your Green Pockets hanging plant bags. Why? For one thing, the Pockets are so fabulous in and of themselves that you want to show them off a bit too and not have them completely hidden by the plant.
The plant opening in the Pockets is only 25 cm wide and 20 cm deep so you want compact plants that don’t dry out quickly. And if you are creating a vertical Blooming Wall by combining The Green Pockets in columns you’ll want to keep your plant heights to about 30 cm (12”) or less.
Bedding plants are a good choice for The Pockets. They are easily available – even in this red hot gardening season when things are selling out – and they are relatively inexpensive and you can find options for both sun and shade.
Even slightly taller options like Coleus can be used in The Pockets by managing their height with pinching. When you pinch out a plant, you remove the top of the main stem, forcing the plant to grow two new stems from the leaf nodes below the pinch. This encourages the buds lower down the stem to produce side shoots which means more flowers! This actually makes the plant stronger too. Pinch flowers further down the stem to keep them short but bushy with more buds.
Here’s a short video I found on how and why to pinch flowers. Her British accent makes it all the more fun!!
Mini versions of your favourite small plants are also a great option. Mini Petunias for example give you so many colour options and a great puffy shape with some trailing. Mini Snapdragons would also make a striking choice. Mini Dahlias are shorter than their regular counterpart and the smaller flowers would look so well proportioned in The Pockets.
And why stop with flowers? Planting herbs in your Green Pockets is also a great idea. But that’s another Blog!!
The Green Pockets are designed in Ireland and produced in Czech Republic and Belarus. I found them on a buying trip at a trade show in Frankfurt. Not only did I fall in love with the planting Pockets and planting Bags, I was super impressed by the family behind the design and creation of these innovative products. All the items in my shop are designed and/or made in Europe. Many by small, family owned companies that are passionate about what they do and why they do it!
Happy Planting!
